Spotlight on: Get Caked NYC

We caught up with Samantha Farber, owner of Get Caked NYC, as she is in the process of launching a website and expanding her custom cake business.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your company:
I’m Sammi Farber. I am 23-years-old and a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America. I guess what people find unique about me is that even though I went to culinary school, I did not study baking whatsoever. I graduated with my Bachelor’s in Culinary Arts and Business Restaurant Management. I think I have taken one baking class in my life and that was a required fundamentals class. All of my knowledge in baking, especially the decorating part, is self-taught. My company is called Get Caked.

What is Get Caked?
Get Caked is a fun idea I came up with one morning when I was thinking about how I could recreate my brand and make myself different from every other cake company. The sole purpose of my company is to prove that “making someone’s day sweeter is a piece of cake“. I have clients and I also pick places and people at random that have a unique “theme” about them and recreate it out of cake. For example, I made an ice cream sundae cake and brought it to Cool Mess. It’s basically a social media marketing campaign because they get free cake and all I ask is in return is that they share their treat and let everyone know they “got caked”. In my opinion, it’s a pretty sweet deal because who doesn’t love cake? Especially if it’s free.

When did you start your company? How did you get into this business?
I originally started a specialty cake company when I was 15-years-old and in high school. It was completely by accident and solely word of mouth. Social media wasn’t anywhere near what it is today, so I didn’t really have that help. I was honestly just doing it for fun – baking cakes, cupcakes and all kinds of different treats and bringing them to school. Suddenly I started to get requests, then requests turned to orders, and before I knew it people were trusting this 15 year old girl to do cakes for their events, including bat mitzvahs. Even though business slowed down during the years I was in school, I never looked back after the first order I got. Baking brings me pure happiness and making people happy by doing something as simple as giving them a sweet treat is just the icing on top of the cake.

What were you doing before Get Caked?
Before Get Caked took off, I was a Food and Beverage Manager at The Waldorf Astoria. When it closed for renovation, I had to think about what I was going to do next and I had more time to take orders than I did in the past. It kind of had a snowball affect.

What’s the best part of your job?
I would say the best part of my job, hands down, would be the joy I see on my clients’ faces after they “get caked”. I am very harsh on myself and am totally my worst critic so to see and hear the feedback from people is really special to me and it means so much to me that they trust me to be a part of their special day or event.

Of all the custom cakes you’ve made, which is your favorite and why?
I think my favorite would have to be the bagel cake. I actually made it for my dad’s birthday and I was shocked at just how realistic it looked. I’d definitely say my specialty is creating cake that doesn’t look like cake. The pasta and meatball cake would definitely be a close second though!

Where is Get Caked available?
Get Caked is available mainly in NYC and Long Island but I offer my cakes to anyone and discuss delivery options. Unfortunately, cakes don’t ship well but I have shipped cupcakes in the past so it’s all up for discussion! I never want to deprive anyone of getting caked.
